Your Sexual Health -

Maintaining healthy sexual function creates a wonderfully fulfilling life. Many men have concerns about erectile function, premature ejaculation, high or low libido, pelvic floor dysfunction or even pain with intercourse. Chinese medicine is a way to encourage the body to maintain blood flow and muscle tone that are essential in helping to maintain a great sex life. Chinese medicine and acupuncture works on a whole body approach. Your body and mind must be considered and treated to achieve optimal sexual health!

Do The Needles Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very fine. They are very different than hypodermic needles used to draw blood. Most men are surprised when the first needle goes in because they can’t believe they didn’t feel anything.  Often, people work it up to be something far greater than it is. If you have a fear of needles this is very different. Just know that if the needles hurt, nobody would get acupuncture! There are occasionally tender points where there may be some slight discomfort felt however, it will dissipate after a few seconds.

Do You Put Needles In My Genitals?

We’re often asked, do any needles go in the genitals? The answer is we do not insert needles into the genitals! Let that concern go! If you are coming in for genital concerns such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, urinary symptoms we can treat these concerns with distal points (points throughout the body).  We are working on the mechanisms that make the genitals function properly therefore, it is not necessary to place the needles in them.
There are very powerful acupuncture points located on the perineum, the fleshy space underneath the testicles. These points can be used when indicated and with the permission of the patient. They are not compulsory as we have many other options to choose from. Our treatments are designed so that you are comfortable and relaxed.

Do You Examine The Genitals To See What is Going On?

In cases of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation as well as other conditions, there is no need to examine the exterior of the genitals when making a Chinese medical diagnosis. This is an internal medical concern. Chinese diagnosis consists of asking you some questions about your concern and health history. Questions such as; are you able to obtain an erection? Are you able to maintain an erection? The practitioner will also ask you general questions such as; do you have cold hands and feet? How do you sleep? What is your diet like? This information helps us to determine what may have contributed to your condition. This will aid us in choosing the most effective treatment for you. The more you can tell us, the better we are able to see a bigger picture and be more efficient in our treatments for faster results. The practitioner will also do a pulse diagnosis and examine your tongue. This is very common during a Chinese medical examination and will help with deciding a Chinese medical treatment. If you are interested in what the practitioner sees and how they decide the treatment then just ask, we are happy to educate our patients on what we are doing and why we're doing it! The more you understand your condition and the treatment for it, you'll quicker you'll improve.

How deep are the needles inserted?

Typically, not very deep. The depth is determined by many factors such as symptoms, area of treatment, etc. Before each session we will discuss your treatment and I will answer all your questions so you will be completely informed before we begin.

What is a “TENS Unit” or Electroacupuncture?

A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit is a device with two or more electrode clamps or pads that send small electrical currents to targeted body parts. An electroacupuncture unit does the same but with alligator clamps that attach to the needles providing a deeper reach.

How long are the sessions?

Sessions usually last 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your situation at the time of your appointment. Your first appointment will last one hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half as the initial consultation will require extra time.

How many sessions will I need?

Each patient’s health problems and subsequent responses are unique, therefore the number and frequency of treatments varies. The typical recommendation is 1-2 treatments a week for 16-20 weeks, although some patients respond favorably after 2-4 treatments. Some may not notice results until after the 9th or 10th visit. In general, chronic conditions require more treatments over a longer period of time than acute conditions do. Acupuncture builds towards improvement each time you have it done. Just like exercise and diet to. The more you dedicate yourself to your treatment, the sooner you’ll see results!
